RV Kilo Moana

The Ship
The R/V Kilo Moana which is Hawaiian for "Oceanographer" is designed to operate in coastal and deep ocean areas and perform general-purpose research including: physical, chemical and biological oceanography; multi-discipline environmental investigations; ocean engineering; marine acoustics; marine geology and geophysics; survey tasks. Typical missions and operations include the following:

  • Sample and data collection of air, surface, midwater and seafloor parameters
  • Sea floor surveys to full ocean depth
  • Launch, towing and recovery of scientific packages
  • Handling and servicing of underwater vehicles, both tethered (ROV) and autonomous (AUV) Deployment and recovery of deep-sea moorings
  • Shipboard data processing and sample analyses
  • Precise navigation, station-keeping and track-line maneuvering in support of both deep sea and coastal operations
  • Long periods of operation at low speeds

The ship is operated by the University of Hawaii, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology under a charter agreement with Office of Naval Research (ONR).
